New ‘Unity’ Series Gallery
Born and raised in Taiwan, Chunhong started training as an artist at
age 12 and became an award-winning art student in Taipei. After
receiving her bachelors degree in art from Hsinchu Teachers College,
she taught art in a public school and privately for four years.
During this time she traveled throughout Asia, gaining an
appreciation of the cultures and art she discovered. Longing to
further develop her talents as a painter, she came to the United
States to study and practice at California State University in
Chico, where she gained her masters degree in 1998.
Her work portrays classical and folk art traditions, from European
still lifes to Tang and Sung dynasty landscapes. In her ‘In
Congruence’ series, she presents the timeless quality of classical
traditions, forming a dialogue and interaction between Eastern and
Western imagery and creating harmony and balance without
encountering epistemological dilemmas of this post-modern era. Each
work is a juxtaposition of a Western still life on canvas set within
a painted wooden panel depicting an Eastern scene. While
acknowledging the importance of maintaining individual and cultural
character and perspectives, her work invokes an appreciation of
different cultures co-existing.
Chunghong’s new ‘Unity’ series is an exploration of how universal
energy is in all of us and in everything around us, from the cosmos
to all living things. The work is a reflection of the tremendous
beauty and complexity that is present in the simplest things in
nature. Her creations reflect influences of art and philosophy of
the East and West. She merges different approaches, styles and
cultural influences to evoke a sense of unity.
